Laser Hair Removal and Sun Exposure

As we pack our cases for our holidays or lay out our summer wardrobe choices it makes sense that our skin (and stubble!) is on our mind.

In fact this time of year is when many first look to seek out treatments such as laser hair removal.

When taking the step to starting your laser hair removal journey this time of year, it’s important to take into account a few considerations in order to get the best results whilst keeping your skin safe.

Let’s face it, who doesn’t want bronzed skin this time of year? But as we go chasing the sun and that tanned look it’s important to consider the effects of sun exposure whilst receiving laser treatment.

Below we discuss our best recommendations for enjoying the summer and your laser treatments safely together.

What do I need to do before treatment?

Prior to your laser hair removal treatments, it is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds as excessive sun exposure can increase the risk of complications and potential side effects during the laser hair removal process.

This occurs because exposure to the sun or UVA light can darken the skin and cause an increase in melanin, which can not only hinder the effectiveness of your laser treatment but may also increase the possibility of side effects such as skin discolouration, burns, or blistering.

Therefore, it is crucial to shield your skin from the sun’s rays and refrain from using tanning beds in the weeks leading up to your laser hair removal appointment.

During your initial consultation at Harborough Laser Clinic, our laser technician can provide you with guidance on what constitutes excessive sun exposure – as a rule of thumb, we recommend that you avoid direct sunlight or exposure to tanning beds on the treatment area for a period of around 4 weeks before your treatment and stop the use of tanning products around 2 weeks before treatment to ensure best results.

What about Sun Exposure after my treatment?

After undergoing laser hair removal treatment, it is advised to avoid direct sun exposure and take necessary precautions to protect the treated area. The laser targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicles, and exposure to the sun after treatment can make the area more susceptive to the complications above and hinder the effectiveness of the treatment.

Here are our top tips to help you to get the most out of your laser hair removal treatments whilst managing sun exposure this summer:

  • Limit sun exposure – It is best to refrain from exposing the treated area to direct sunlight for at least two weeks (up to 4 weeks) following your treatment. This includes both natural sunlight and tanning beds.
  • Cover up where possible – If you find yourself spending time outdoors within the first couple of weeks after the procedure, ensure that you cover the treated area with appropriate clothing.
  • Sunscreen – Apply sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher to the treated area. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if sweating or swimming.
  • Plan ahead – Plan your treatments and trips away around each other to avoid complications and achieve the results you want.

It is important to consult with your laser technician at Harborough Laser Clinic who will be carrying out your laser hair removal treatment for specific instructions regarding post-treatment care. They can offer you individualised advice based on your skin type, the laser being use, and the specific area being treated.
